Talk Title: Mapping Fluid Mud in the Mississippi River Delta Using a Multibeam Echosounder

More Information:

Soft sediment riverine environments such as the Mississippi River delta contain significant sediment flow specifically, fluid mud. The fluid mud obscures the nautical depth and presents challenges to ensure safe navigation. Currently, widely spaced dual-frequency single beam transects are used to survey channels and infrequently compared with RheoTune spot measurements to determine the navigable bottom, both, taking a considerable amount of time and personnel to complete while desired higher level CATZOC navigation requirements are not achievable.

The NORBIT Winghead multibeam echosounder can reliably penetrate through layers of fluid mud. Using the Layered Media Detection mode for suspended sediment will make the acquisition achievable to the navigable bottom with at least 3x-depth swath coverage of robust depth determinations yielding, for the first time, the possibility for multiple asterixis CATZOC surveys in fluid mud.

The presentation will discuss the acquisition process, data results and considerations for future fluid mud navigable bottom measurements.  Navigable fluid mud bottom mapping is now possible to high-level CATZOC A1/A2 confidences.
